Magnets everywhere!

As part of our inquiry we have been searching everywhere for magnets both at home and at school. Have a look at some of the magnets we have found at home. This week, we have also been sharing our ideas about magnetic forces and discovering the properties of magnets. Ted's uncle made an electromagnet and he also gave us a strong neodynium magnet as well to use. We had fun trying to move the iron filings around in the container using these different magnets.

Magnetism - Science and Technology!

Our Science inquiry last term involved magnets. As part of this we made our own fishing game with the help of our buddies. We made fish with the numbers from 1 to 10on them, attached them to a magnet and then tried to fish them up. We are using the game at home to help us to recognise our numbers. This term in our inquiry we are using magnets as part of technology. We are going to explore all the ways we can use magnets and then design our own magnet using different materials. The one we make must meet differnt criteria especially the one that says - it will be strong enough to hold our reading and spelling homework on our fridge.

PEACE Week

Room 3 took full part in the Peace Week activities that had been organised by the students in years 5 and 6. They had their face painted, learnt some origami, coloured pictures, played sports and watched a talent quest and cooking demonstration. They had so much fun they want to do it all again. Ned had a t shirt with the peace sign on it and had his face painted to match.

Book Week

On the last week of the term we went to the library each lunchtime to listen to stories read to us by different staff members. On Friday we dressed up as our favourite book characters and brought along some money so we could purchase some library books for the Orphans in Nepal. Can you guess which characters we are?

Exploring the Senior School

One afternoon we went across the road to visit our friends in Years 7 and 8. Mr Eames talked to us and then we went into the 'Greenhouse classroom' and saw the fantastic sustainable houses that the seniors had made. We were absolutely amazed and very impressed by the wonderful models that had been done. After that we visited the worm farm and the garden. Ana, Merlinde and Maija have been coming over each week as part of the gardening group so they proudly showed us their garden and the compost and spoke about the work they had been doing. We lcved exploring the senior school and will visit again soon.

Te Reo Maori and The Pou

In Maori Language week Whaea Arini came to school. She showed us a slideshow featuring Pania and her two brothers performing at Te Papa during Matariki. She showed us some precious taonga, how to use the poi and she read to us. We loved having her. One morning our kaumatua, whanau group and all the children and staff gathered around our pou. We had karakia, waiata and special speeches. Later that day our precious pou were removed and work has begun to restore them.

Electric Circuits are fun!

Room 3 have been using wires with alligator clips, a bulb and a battery to create a circuit. We love doing Science.

Room 3 have been learning about the Colour Wheel. We have been mixing the primary colours together to make the secondary colours. We also made different tints and shades. One day we read the book "Biscuit Bear' and then mixed white, brown, black and gold paint together to create our paintings of him. We also have been learning different brush strokes. Welcome Fraser, Yoshiki and Ned to school.

Junior Assembly

On Friday Room 3 were the hosts of our Junior School Assembly. Merlinde and Jacob were fantastic presenters. Marcus, Amber and Alexa shared what they knew about magnets with everyone. All of room 3 then sang the 'days of the week' song that they have been learning about during mathematics.

Magnetism Fun!

This week we have continued with our science inquiry about magnetism. We discussed what we knew about magnets and then we made a list of objects from around our classroom that we thought the magnet would or would not stick to. We then each explored our classroom with magnets to see if our predictions were correct or not. On Tuesday we had fun in the magic sand with the wands. Many fun patterns were created. After that we played the magnetic fishing game and are now creating our own magnetic game to play in mathematics and at home.

Wow! What a great first week back we have had. We welcomed eight new children to our class on Monday and they have all settled in very well. It was Science Week and on Tuesday we joined the rest of the school for the launching of a rocket. We have also begun our inquiry about magnetism. All of the children were very excited on Friday as they finally got introduced to their big buddies from room 7. Room 3 also worked together well and earned the Assembly Bear for the first time. The week finished with them dancing and having fun at the disco.

Grandparents and 'Grandfriends' Day!

Monday was certainly a memorable day for the children and also for their visitors. Grandparents and Grandfriends from all around New Zealand and overseas came to school for this special occasion. We welcomed the visitors and then the children entertained the visitors with songs, art, stories and a slideshow of what they do at school and then were hosts in their classrooms proudly sharing their work with the adults. The visitors brought special items to share with the children and then we all had a lovely afternoon tea together. We all enjoyed finding out about how life has changed since the grandparents were at school. Thank you very much to everyone who came. We welcomed Marcus to school and discovered that he is the fourth generation of his family to attend our school.

On Thursday, we were treated to a great performance by Eddie Quansah. He had the children mesmerized. They were fascinated by the different instruments he played and they thoroughly enjoyed moving to the various rhythms. Some of our class stood up in front of the whole school and had a turn on the instruments too!

This week we had our class photos taken and we also had a tsunami practice. We did very well to walk up to McKenzie track from our classroom in less than seven minutes. We said fond farewell to Sophie and hope she is enjoying her new school. We said hello to Bobby as our newest class member. Room 3 have also been using the large balls to practice their throwing and catching skills.

We have been learning about our family tree and the activities that our parents and grandparents did as children compared to what we do. Ana showed us photos of her grandparents and Ted showed us a quilt his grandma had made for him. The teachers showed items from their childhood. There was a small child's sewing machine, a wooden dolly peg, glass milk bottle, telephone and elastic twist game. We even saw a photo of what Muritai School looked like one hundred years ago.

Wow - this week we had a ride on a double decker bus from school into Wellington and back. When we were in Wellington, we were an audience to three fantastic shows as part of the Capital E Children's Art Festival. On Friday, we had another earthquake practice and we are all very good at the 'turtle' position. We also welcomed Brodie and Amelia to our class.

Old and New!

On Wednesday, we visited Pataka Museum and learnt about what life was like a hundred years ago. We dressed up in old fashioned clothing, did washing by hand and used a wringer, wrote with a nib pen and ink and on a slate, played games with marbles and saw lots of equipment that was used in daily living that we do not use now. We then had lunch and played on a new playground at Aotea Lagoon. On Friday, we welcomed Harrison to our class.

Week 5 already!

We welcomed four new students to our class this week. We hope Ana, Sophie, Oliver and Ted all had a great first week of learning. On Monday afternoon, we went to the beach as part of Seaweek. We joined our friends from the junior classes and enjoyed making fabulous creations in the sand. On Tuesday, we did a two minute silence with the whole school out on the field beneath our New Zealand flag, which was flying half mast, to remember those people lost or missing in the Christchurch earthquake. On Friday, we dressed in red and black and donated money to the Christchurch relief fund.

Laptops are fun!

We got the laptops out and learnt how to work the 'Kidpix' programme. We loved it and quickly changed backgrounds, used different fonts, created pictures using paints, pencils and stamps and we also wrote our names. We are very clever!

We love bubbles!

On Monday we read a book together called 'Bubbles.' After that we went outside and blew bubbles around our playground. We then came back into our classroom and wrote fantastic stories about this.

This week we welcomed Jack to school and he is enjoying being in room 3. We are all getting better at our swimming and we really enjoyed visiting Sue in our library. We have also been watching a chrysalis and it changed into a beautiful monarch butterfly. This week we also met Merlinde's new baby sister.

This week we started our unit on Statistics in mathematics. We counted how many different colours there were in a box of lollies and them plotted our data onto a graph. We then discussed our findings.
Every day we have been to the pool for aquatics education. We have a trained swimming instructor in the pool with us and this week we learnt how to blow bubbles and float on our front and back. On Tuesday we visited Heather in our local library. She showed us how to be safe in the library in the unlikely event of an earthquake. We practiced being turtles. We explored the library to find exit signs and she then read us a fantastic story before we chose our own book to bring back to read at school. This week we were also introduced to Jumpjam and joined all of our friends in the Junior school for this. Two of us were very brave and even went up on stage. On Wednesday, we explored our Junior playground and discussed how to play safely at school. We are enjoying school and are looking forward to more exciting learning experiences next week.

Our Christmas Concert

On Thursday, we dressed up in the colours of green or red and in the afternoon we went to the hall to perform some of our Christmas songs. Maz was the announcer and the very big audience really enjoyed our concert. We then had a yummy Christmas party outside under the sunshade with everyone.

Joshua is now living in France and his mum sent us a slideshow of what he is doing there. We loved seeing him at his new home and school on our big classroom screen. We discussed each of the pictures and even practiced some French.

Education Outside the Classroom Week

Room 3 have had a lot of fun doing E.O.T.C. activities. On Monday, they were captivated by Zebong who told wonderful stories. He asked some children and teachers in the audience to act out different parts as he told the story. On Tuesday, we went into Wellington by bus and had a fantastic time at Capital E. First, we posted our wish lists into the Wishing tree and then walked through beautifully decorated Christmas trees and scenes. We then worked with Santa's elves to create a decoration for our tree, visit the Gingerbread house and do some fun activities while inside it. We also climbed the wall and visited Santa in his house while listening to stories. On Wednesday, we got out the parachute on the far field and had fun diving under it, running from side to side under it as our names were called and tried very hard to keep the balls on top of it as we shook it. On Thursday, we went to Avalon Park as part of our inquiry. We sketched and played on the equipment as well as had our morning tea and lunch there. On Friday, we stayed at school and did some fun Christmas activities. We were very tired but we loved our first experiences of E.O.T.C. week and aslo for some of us enjoyed our very first bus trip.

Over the past few weeks Room 3 have been working with our friends in Room 1 to learn some dance routines for our item as part of our full school Production. This week we finally were 'Stars' on stage in 'The Short and Incredibly Happy Life of Riley." We all had rat costumes and our faces painted and then we went on stage and danced to "Walking on Sunshine."

Clean up New Zealand Week!

On Wednesday Room 3 and their big buddies from Room 15 went to our local beach to pick up rubbish as part of Clean up New Zealand Week. When we got to the beach we all put on gloves and then with our buddies we headed up the beach and into the dunes. Any item that we found we took back to Ben who kept a total of all the different types of rubbish that was picked up. On our return to school our buddies are going to make a graph of what we discovered.

Room 3 - World wide Travels!

Amy and Mia went on a wonderful trip to Germany and while they were there they sent us photos of themselves having fun in the sun and water and also on a huge merry-go-round. They have now returned and have shown us a slideshow of what else they did. They also gave us some yummy sweets and cookies. Cella is touring around South America at the moment and this week she sent us some photos including her patting monkeys. Joshua is leaving this week and going to France and during the holidays Ollie will be moving here from England to join us.

Royal New Zealand Ballet

Recently some dancers from the Royal New Zealand Ballet visited our school. We watched them warm up at the barre and then perform some dances. The ballerina answered our questions, showed us some ballet shoes and then taught us some dance steps. We are looking forward to going into Wellington later in the year to watch them perform on stage.

Life Education

This week we have had a lesson in the Life Education classroom with Jo and Harold, the giraffe. We are learning about a balanced diet, the food pyramid, parts of the body and all the things that we need to keep ourselves healthy. We talked about what foods we need to have most of, some of and a little of and then built the food pyramid. We learnt some actions and then we met Tam and discovered where our organs were. When we got back to our classroom we put on a suit and added the correct parts of the body to it.

Junior School Duathlon!

On Monday we ran, biked or scootered around the Duathlon course. First we ran very fast around the block and then we put on our helmets and rode our bikes or scooters very quickly to the Finish line. We all finished the whole race in under five minutes. Lots of mums and dads came along to watch or help us. We all enjoyed the fun experience and wish we could do it all again!

Soccer Fun!

Room 3 are soccer stars! Sportzone came to school and ran a tournament. We learnt lots of ball skills and played against other teams from year 1. Here we are trying our best.

Inquiry Learning with Gingerbread Men!

Room 3 have been learning about changes in food. On Thursday we put some dry ingredients and liquid together in a bowl and used a machine to change them into a mixture. We then rolled out this mixture and used a cutter to make the shape. Next we decorated and cooked our gingerbread men. They were absolutely delicious when we ate them!

Mr Chadwick talked to us about Matariki. We watched the children do weaving and string games. We also visited the worm farm and had fun in the boat of the senior garden area. We celebrated Green day by dressing up in lots of green clothes. Lucy and Maggie May completed level 29 of the Reading Rocket.

Our year 7 and 8 students invited us to see their wonderful Science Fair exhibits. We were amazed at all the experiments that they had done. Four of them bought their exhibits over to our classroom for us to have a closer look and to answer our questions.

Hosting Junior School Assembly.

All the Junior School classes joined us in room 3 for our Junior Assembly. Sam and Maggie May were the announcers and Joshua and Magnus introduced our class items. We sang an action song and played instruments. Cella read one of her fantastic stories to us. We showed a slide show of us acting out the Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Room 3 have been very lucky to have been part of the audience to two lots of special visitors on the last two Fridays. The first visitors presented us with a fantastic show called 'Jungle Bungle' and we were absolutely spellbound hanging on every word of the story that they told and acted .

The second visitors were the fabulous year 7 and 8 Kapahaka group from Pukeatua School, who entertained us with haka and waiata. We were absolutely mesmerized by their outstanding performance!

On Wednesday afternoon we had lots of fun making all sorts of models with boxes. We used a range of boxes and different craft materials. Look at what we have made.

Gymnastics is fun!

Every Monday and Tuesday Room 3 and our friends from Room 1 have been doing fun activities in gymnastics together. First we do warm ups on the mats with only certain parts of our bodies being allowed to touch the mat. We, next have a feather, which we have to blow up and catch again on different parts of our bodies. We then work with our partner to solve tricky problems and see what positions we can create with our bodies together. Next we work in three teams and rotate around the hall doing different activities on the equipment. After that we do exercises on the mat to cool down.

Heart Jam

On Friday we took part in the nationwide aerobics session called ' HeartJam' to raise funds for the children who have problems with their hearts. We enjoyed doing a whole lot of different Jumpjam moves and especially loved being up on the stage performing one of our favourite songs called 'Candyman' in front of the rest of the Junior School.

This week we talked about plant life cycles and as part of this we have planted some seeds in our classroom. We also planted our own bean and over the next few weeks we will keep a diary of how it grows. During inquiry, we also talked about how animals change their colour and about camouflage. As part of this during visual art, we then mixed different colours and designed our own chameleon.

Each day we do some fun activities as part of our P.M.P. programme. Each week the activities change. Last week we were working together in our teams by crawling through wooden shapes and big boxes, walking along the plank and ladder and balancing on the low beam. Have a peek at what we were doing.

Changes in my World!

Our inquiry this term is about Changes in my World. We have been learning about how we have changed since we were babies. We have been talking about our baby photos and what we did before we turned five and started school. On Friday we were very lucky to have Joshua's mum and his two little brothers come to visit our classroom. Joshua's mum then bathed her four month old baby and talked about how much he has already changed.

This week we did some painting to show how trees look in Spring. Look at the different shades we have created on our trees. In mathematics we have been learning about the seasons and in Inquiry we have been learning about the changes that occur to deciduous trees throughout the year.

On Friday we bought poppies and had a special assembly about ANZAC Day. On Monday we went to the Centennial Gates beside our playground and talked about the memorials and wreaths that had been laid there.

Throughout this term we are going to do lots of painting. We have begun by mixing primary and secondary colours and experimenting to see what we colours result. We listened to a story called ' Biscuit Bear' and added black and white to create new shades and tints.

This term we are doing P.M.P. We have been learning how to use the 'Happy Sticks'. We are concentrating very hard to listen to the CD and follow the instructions that we hear. We are clapping the Happy Sticks up and down, left and right, in front and behind our bodies and trying to repeat the beat that we hear. We also began doing floor exercises using the beam and ladder. Flynn has started to learn the violin at school this week and he showed us what he has to do.

At the end of term Easter Bunny hopped into room 3 and collected special cardboard eggs which were then hidden around our playground. Later on we went on a treasure hunt to look for our special cardboard eggs. When we found ours we swapped it for a real Easter Egg. Yum!

Fabulous Spelling!

One lovely sunny day we went outside to practice our spelling using chalk on the concrete. We wrote our names first and then all the words that we know how to write. We are very clever!

Keeping Safe around Fire!

On Friday we went for a visit to our local fire station. Magnus was so proud as his mum was one of the firefighters who talked to us about Fire Safety while we were there. She reminded us to 'get down, get low and get out which we practiced around the room. We looked at the clothing that firefighters have to wear and some of the equipment they use in fires. We asked lots of questions and then we were very lucky. They let us climb into the fire engine and then have lots of fun using one of the hoses. The firefighters gave us a special pack to take home. We have to make sure our family has an escape plan and a meeting place in the unlikely event of a fire occurring at our house and also to change the batteries on our smoke alarms. Room 3 used the pod of laptops and thoroughly enjoyed finding out how to use the different tools on the Kidpix programme. We worked cooperatively in pairs with one person being the driver and the other being the passenger and then we swapped over.

We are a Green Gold Award Enviroschool so on Friday we visited the Senior School to see what they have been doing lately. We loved exploring their garden area and especially had fun in the boat. While we were there, Mr Eames talked to us about our Worm Farm and what food we could collect for them. He also talked to us about recycling at school and at home.

Fantastic Fairy Bread!

On Tuesday we learnt how to make fairy bread. We followed the instructions. First we spread the slice of bread with margarine and then we sprinkled it with hundreds and thousands. After that we cut it into halves, quarters or eighths and lastly we ate it.

Swimming and Keeping Safe around Water!

Each week we have been going to the Eastbourne Pool to practice our swimming skills. We have also been learning how to keep safe in and around water. Chris and Jeremy are two life guards and they came to talk to us about water safety. They explained what their jobs involved and then asked us lots of questions about water safety and were very impressed with what we knew.

In Mathematics, Room 3 have been carrying out a range of investigations. They have been collecting data and learning how to put the data onto bar graphs. Last week they investigated what colour is the most popular in a box of Smarties. This is what they discovered.

Keeping Fit!

Every day we do fitness. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays we have Jumpjam in the hall with all our friends from around the Junior School. On Wednesdays we use balls outside on the court and on Thursdays we do Pukeko Stomp in our classroom. One day we watched the Jumpjam DVD and tried out some of the moves.

We are currently learning about how to be safe in different environments. We have been practicing how to be safe in our classroom and playground and on Friday Senior Constables Julie, Ants and Sherie from the police came to talk to us about being safe around roads and in vehicles. Our friends from room 4 joined us. The children have been using white hat thinking so please feel free to ask them about a fact that they have learnt.

Our big buddies!

We met our big buddies from Room 15 on Tuesday. We introduced ourselves and then they read fantastic stories to us. We loved meeting our buddies and we enjoyed playing with them outside in the playground too. We are looking forward to their visit again next week when we will read to them.

Our first day in Room 3!

Wednesday was our first day at school and what a fantastic day it was! We began by welcoming nine new children and their families to school. We then did some fitness, singing and mathematics. After morning tea we watched the powhiri and then we went on a tour around the school. This included visiting the school office, Mr Bird and Mr Skilton in their offices, the medical room, the staffroom, our friends in room 4 and our library. We then played outside in the different areas around our playground. After lunch we did lots of reading and writing in our classroom. Mr Bird then let us each choose a special book to keep to commemorate our first day at school. We ended the day with warm fuzzies about Superstar Sophie.

Our class End of Year Picnic!

Everyone went to the park near Day's Bay for our end of year class picnic. This was a great chance for all the children and their families to relax together. The children loved running around the huge space and especially enjoyed the lolly scramble! Special thanks to Katherine and Hayley for organising this for us. Education Outside the Classroom

Over the past two weeks the children have enjoyed taking part in a range of activities outside of the classroom. They were fantastic at the Athletics Sports and so proud to show everyone their new skills. The students also had a lot of fun when the coaches from Kelly Sports came and taught them a variety of games using a wide range of equipment. On Tuesday, they went by bus to the NewDowse to see the 'Tickle my senses' exhibition and take part in the followup workshop. Before this, they enjoyed playing in a new playground and visiting the aviaries. Later in the morning they visited the children's library. They met the librarian who explained what was available for them to borrow from the library and then she read them an exciting story. Following this they went down to the returns area and put a book through the slot. They then went behind the scenes and scanned the returned books.

3 D creations

Over the past few weeks, we have been listening to a wide range of stories that feature strong character descriptions. This week we used plasticene to create colourful 3 D creations of the different characters and props chosen from these stories. We then retold each of the stories to our class using the characters and props that we had created.

Green Gold Celebration Day!

What a fantastic day we had on Friday as we celebrated the achievement of the Green Gold Enviroschool Award. We started the day by watching the hangi being prepared and then we joined in with the powhiri. After that we listened to speeches including those by our Year 7 and 8 leaders and then our Kapahaka group performed on stage. All this was then followed by the presentation of the flag, certificate and special tree, which was planted in our playground. We watched the hangi being lifted and then we all ate the yummy food together. The fire engine and fire fighters came and that night we had a special disco.

Junior School Assembly

This week Room 3 were the hosts of the Junior School assembly. Theo and Georgina were wonderful presenters. During the assembly six of us read out our fantastic recounts about Jack and Jill to everyone. We have finished our calendar art and it is on display in our classroom. Some of us made butterflies using crayon and dye while others made sea creatures using pastels.

Wow! What a fabulous first week back we have had. Everyone has had a lovely holiday and have now returned to school eager to do lots more fantastic learning.

On Monday we sang 'Happy Birthday' and ate delicious chocolate cake with cream on top because Theo and Chevron have now turned six. On Tuesday Sam had his first turn at horse riding and loved it. He was very clever to do all of the obstacle course especially on such a big horse! On Wednesday we did Kapahaka with Mr Chadwick in the hall. He taught us some new waiata and we loved doing the actions that went with them. Tino Pai Rawa Ruma Toru! On Thursday we began our new Inquiry. This term we are learning about our body and we are going into different classes each week to find out about the different parts of our body. On Friday we are going to start some new activities in Enrichment.

Kapahaka, Pets and Instruments

Chevron is very good at Kapahaka so he did Kapahaka sessions with the students in years 3 and 4. We were very impressed when he showed us the haka he had learnt. We are all looking forward to doing more Kapahaka each Wednesday next term.

Amy got a new kitten and bought it to school to show us. We all took turns to pat it and it's fur was so soft. We asked her lots of questions about her special pet and then as a class we discussed how to care for animals. We also thought of lots of 'wow' words to describe her kitten.

Oscar has just started to learn the violin. He told us what he had to do to care for the instrument. As a class, we discussed what is involved in being a performer and also what being a member of an audience involves. Oscar then demonstrated how the violin is played by both plucking the strings and using the bow. We really loved his performance and look forward to watching him perform again for us soon.

In Physical Education lessons we have been learning a whole lot of fun gymnastic skills and using the equipment in a variety of ways. In fitness we have been learning a lot of fun skills using a skipping rope. We had an amazing 'Jump Off' to show everyone how clever we have got.

We had an Art Extravaganza. Before this we read lots of books including 'Where the Wild Things Are' by Maurice Sendak and 'The Magic Hat' by Mem Fox. We then created some fantastic art works using mixed media of our favourite Wild Thing and our own Magic hat.

Room 3 are all fantastic readers. Ethan, Cameron, Hugo, Daniel, Shannyn, Yasmin, Sabine and Oscar have all achieved the twenty nine levels of the Reading Rocket. Each week a lovely kind grandma comes into our classroom and reads special books aloud to us. We also do a whole range of fun literacy activities during our rotation time. As part of our Inquiry we have been going into other classes around our Junior School to learn about some Myths and Legends from Japan, Australia, France, Holland, China and New Zealand. We have students in our Junior School who have English as their second language and have joined us from these other countries.

We are very busy with our learning already in Room 3. We have started our Inquiry and each week we go to another classroom in our Junior School to learn about different Myths and Legends from a range of countries. We are also learning how to skip with a rope so that we can do the 'Jump off' at the end of the term and show all our friends and families how clever we are. Room 4 joined us on Friday in the hall for our first session of gymnastics. We especially loved having fun with the feathers.

This week we did some drama and dance with Mrs Hooke. We had to make ourselves into different shapes when she said 'change.' We also took turns to make comments to each other about the various movements that we had created. Look in the photos to see some of the movements we did.

Last week we had the World of Mathematics presentation visit our school. Room 3 took part in the hands on fun problem solving activities with our friends from rooms 1 and 4. We worked together in small groups to solve the different problems and then recorded our answers in our own booklets.

Every Friday we go to different classrooms to do the Enrichment programme. We are mixed up with our friends from around the Junior School in our 'tree' (Pohutukawa, Rimu, Kauri, Totara or Kowhai) groups. When we go to Room 3 we do a range of music and movement activities. We also do some activities from PMP (the Perceptual Motor Programme). We love using the bean bags and Happy Sticks. Here are some of us using the Happy Sticks to keep in time to the music!
