Room 3 are Scientists!

On Friday we visited the gardens across the road in the Senior School. We were exploring and observing as we searched the area for different butterflies and the plants that they were attracted to. We want to find out what plants the butterflies like so that we can grow some to create our own 'Junior School Butterfly Garden.' The investigation is the start of our inquiry about life cycles.

How exciting to create your own Butterfly garden! At home Mia has been learning that Monarch caterpillars (larve) need lots and lots of swan plant leaves to eat. We had 20 caterpillars on our plant and they devoured all of the leaves! They then had to go in search of another swan plant. We are hoping that next summer our swan plant will be bigger and we will be able to watch a caterpillar make its chrysalis and turn into a butterfly.
We also have a big lavender plant at our house that the cabbage white butterflies love to land on. :)
